CLOS DU CALVAIRE 2004 RED 87
CLOS DU CALVAIRE 2005 RED 89 – 91
The 2004 Clos du Calvaire has a medium ruby color, good concentration, and tasty berry and cherry fruit intermixed with some herbs, incense and spice. It is best drunk within its first 3-4 years of life. The Dark plum/ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Clos du Calvaire has more sweetness, greater ripenesse, but at the same time, more structure and tannin than the Chateauneuf du Pape. It is a pure, medium to full-bodied wine that should drink nicely for 7 – 8 years.
DOMAINE DU PERE PAPE 2004 RED 88
DOMAINE DU PERE PAPE 2005 RED 87 – 88
The 2004 Domaine du Père Pape is the most elegant and the lightest, with plenty of berry fruit, hints of tobacco leaf, Provençal herbs, and resiny pine forest notes along with plenty of cherry fruit. It has zesty acidity but little tannin. The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a dark ruby/purple- tinged color and a sweet nose of cedar, fruitcake, black cherries, licorice and spice. It is the most supple textured of the group, and probably best drunk in its first 5-6 years of life.
LA CRAU DE MA MERE 2004 RED 90
LA CRAU DE MA MERE 2005 RED 90 – 92
The best of the group is the 2004 La Crau de Ma Mère, which is full-bodied, has more opulence, deeper fruit, but loads of black cherry and licorice notes interwined with hints of seaweed, roasted herbs and smoke. It is a real beauty. Drink it over the next 5-7 years. Once again, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 La Crau de Ma Mère shows intense kirsch liqueur notes intermixed with licorice, earth and loads of tannin and decent acidity. It is certainly forward, as most of these wines are, but more structured and backward. Give it 1 – 2 years of bottle age and drink it over the following decade.
